Doraemon Stamps from Japan
Thursday, May 21st 2009

In my last entry about anime philately, my friend Hippo happen to write a comment stating that it is unlikely for Japanese Postal Office to issue stamps for Kanon and Clannad, which happen to be my favorite anime so far. His reason was because Detective Conan and Evangelion - the two anime which stamps have been issued by Japanese Post Office - are popular anime that have been translated into many languages. Clannad and Kanon in other hand is only popular within certain circle of anime fans.

I would say that what Hippo say is a good theory as it comes with a prediction. Hippo's theory on anime philately predict that other anime that have been translated into many languages will have their stamps issued as well. Turn out that the theory is good enough to predict the existence of Doraemon Postage Stamp. Just a little search and I found several Postal Stamps thet feature Doraemon.

However, I think the theory should be extended to explain why stamps featuring other popular anime such as Naruto, Dragon Ball and Crayon Shinchan does not exist. As far as I know, those anime are very popular around the world. In fact those three anime are even more popular than Evangelion. However, Google had failed to find me stamps featuring those anime. Perhaps there is vector field preventing people who buy those postal stamps to upload the image into the internet.

Anime Themed Stamps from Japan
Tuesday, May 19th 2009

When I was small, I used to collect stamps. In fact I have three books full of stamps back then. Stamps used to be important things back then when we have to send message using snail mail. One of my elder female cousin live in Malaysia, so we have to send mails if we happen to have something to say.

I was not a good writer when I was smaller though, so I end up sending few to no snail mails to nobody. Later, I learned how to use email and I never bother with snail mails and stamps anymore.

Stamps however still have other values beside to act as something to be glued on letters. Some editions of stamps are purchased by philatelist around the world, just because of their collectability and educational value. Had the stamps been designed as plain and boring piece of paper, no one might be bothered to become philatelist.

It is the fact that most stamps are designed with adorable images, such as anime characters like the example shown above, that made millions of people around the world become philatelist. The Conan-themed and Evangelion-themed stamps above might be sold for only 800 yen per collection sheet now. However, we might observe really wealthy otakus purchasing the same stamps for millions yens 20 or 30 years in the future.

For now, I am waiting until Japanese Post Office issue either Kanon-themed or Clannad-themed postage stamps.
