Terrain Advantages in Commandos 2
Wednesday, January 13th 2010
Commandos 2 : Men of Courage is a strategy game that allow players to devise various tactics to finish a mission. The map for each given mission is unique and some maps have terrain that allow players to annihilate a lot of enemy soldiers by using only guns or rifle, even if the players play the very hard level.
Guns in Savo Island
There is a bamboo bridge in the middle of Savo island connecting two higher lands separated by a waterfall. Near the waterfall, there is a small piece of navigable land and a thick folliage for your commando to hide. By placing your commando there, you may freely kill some enemy soldiers who happen to stroll above the bridge. The enemies who happen to hear your gunfire is going to search for your whereabout, but they are prevented to do so by the terrain. They have to follow the red path to go to where your commandos firing their guns. Descending a ladder take a lot of time, so your commando will have a chance to kill 1 or 2 enemy soldiers before hiding in the thick foliage.
After the surviving enemy soldiers arrive to the small piece of land below the bridge and find that your commandos is nowhere to be found, they are going to run back to the bridge above to bury their deceased comrade. This is when your commandos should get out of the thick folliage and kill some more enemy soldiers. Repeat until the enemy soldiers nearby are annihilated or you run out of ammo. Use pistols if you don't want to run out of ammo.
What the enemy soldiers should do in real life : ignore the height, jump to the river below the bridge, close to the enemy commando together and corner the commando. At least they should search the foliage for the hiding commando when they find that the commando is nowhere to be found.
The Giant in Haiphong
The map for mission "The Giant in Haiphong" is divided into two parts by a wall. In the South is the civilian residence. In the North is the harbor area. These two parts are connected by a guard house in the center of the map. This guard house, while intended for security purpose, is actually a sweet spot for your commando to annihilate enemy patrol groups ( there are lots of enemy patrol groups in Haiphong ). You only have to kill some patrol group member from below the guard house and hide in the office house when they search for you.
Once they arrived at the source of gun fire only to find that your commando is nowhere to be found, they will go back to the guard house to look at their comrade's remain. Get out of your hiding place, kill some more and repeat until the enemy patrol group is annihilated. Then you can lure other patrol groups to go to the trap.
What the enemy soldiers should do in real life : I am pretty sure that a good patrol group leader will call other patrol group and search all nearby buildings.
Bridge over the River Kwai
There is only one enemy patrol group in River Kwai maps. They are also not really much threat for your commandos, since what they mostly do is facing the edges of the maps listening to an officer who don't know that the allied commandos is nearby. However, this map offer an extreme terrain advantage for your commandos to annihilate a large group of enemy soldier by divide and conquer strategy.
First, you can place your commando in the edge of the bridge connected to a small house near the river. Kill whatever enemy your commando happen to be able to get in his aim.
The enemies who hear the gunfire will look at the location of your commando, but they have to take a really long detour to arrive at the location of your commando. In this map the only land route connecting the two pieces of land is the bridge itself.
After travelling a really long detour, the enemies are going to find that your commando is nowhere to be found. Since your commando can swim, you only need to cross the river and aim your gun to the other side. The surviving enemy soldier will travel the same long route to your present location, while you swim to the other side and prepare for another shot. Repeat until the enemies are annihilated.
What the enemy soldiers should do in real life : I would recommend running away. There isn't much you can do if you face an enemy who have a beneficiary who see everything from above. Especially if that particular beneficiary have played and cleared the same maps for hundreds times. However, if said beneficiary happen to like anime, you can prove that you are the predecessor of an anime author in modern Japan and that anime doesn't suck, then that beneficiary might be interested to spare your life. That particular beneficiary get more points by neutralizing without killing anyway.

| | Hah.. commandoes 2 again... I'm not really good at this game. Btw, what should you do if your enemy had a benefactor who oversees everything? Hide away from the overseers point of view of course..

| | @ Daniel : Not going to work after that benefactor played the game for hundreds time. Honestly though, the interesting thing about this game is, no matter how many times you played, it is still really hard to complete a mission flawlessly. I often tempted to use more frontal method of elimination.
